History of the Organization

Grainy Surface

The Boyhood Initiative of Missouri was created in September 2007 to address the social needs of child and adolescent males who are affected by mental illness, particularly disruptive behavior disorders (i.e. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Conduct Disorder); mood disorders (particularly Bipolar I Disorder), and mild forms of mental retardation. We are a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization with a mission of helping and teaching this population ways to better socialize in their physical and social environments. Our goal is simple in that we provide services to these individuals and their families through innovative and creative interventions that address the child’s holistic needs. We see these needs incorporating three distinct areas of life for children: social-emotional, physical, and educational.  Thus, our programs focus on mental health counseling, mentoring, tutoring, and parenting support groups.

While our name specifies a commitment to child and adolescent males, we recognize that children exist within a social network of other family members. We feel that a child’s needs are met through the sacrifice and dedication of these individuals. As such, our secondary goal is to empower and enhance the lives of (1) single mothers, (2) foster parents, and (3) grandparents and other adult relatives raising the children of their extended family through support groups, psychoeducation, and parent-training programs. Lastly, we acknowledge the pain and trauma of child and adolescent males abandoned by their fathers due to incarceration. Thus, we help to build and/or rebuild relationships between young men ages 5-12 and their incarcerated fathers through court-approved family counseling.

In September 2023, the agency underwent a significant transformation by changing its name to the Boyhood Initiative of America. This new title was carefully chosen to better represent its expanded mission and commitment to addressing issues that affect boys across the nation. The rebranding signals a renewed focus on promoting healthy development, advocacy, and support for boys, aiming to ensure their well-being and success in various aspects of life throughout the country.
